Product Marketing Manager | University of California Press

To this end, we are seeking a Product Marketing Manager with solid data management skills and an interest in academic publishing and bookselling. The ideal candidate will have fantastic executional skills, a strong attention to detail, and an understanding of the competitive market landscape for books. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Marketing, the Product Marketing Manager will oversee the core aspects of product positioning in the marketplace for all titles. As a member of the Books Marketing team this person will work collaboratively with marketing, sales, and publicity team members to ensure all communications and materials are consistent, accurate, and timely.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

50% Product Management

Manages product information displayed on internal and external platforms, including UC Press website, Amazon, Edelweiss and others. Attends weekly marketing launch meeting, capturing required information. Identifies key selling points and create UVPs, with particular emphasis on competitive titles and market trends. Creates and maintains all metadata, including for backlist titles. Updates recent backlist and bestsellers based on keywords, new information, feedback from sales, reviews, awards etc. Manages assignment of BISAC codes, subjects, and courses for website. Owns UC Press product pages (lifetime population, accuracy etc.). Writes copy for select academic titles (TXT and CBK).

30% Go-to-Market Strategy

Clearly articulates the features and benefits of our products to relevant audiences, including faculty, librarians, and sales reps. Tracks overarching marketing goals, strategy, and initiatives to inform day-to-day work. Proofs sales and marketing tools to ensure accuracy of product information and positioning. Helps develop and refine the tools and campaigns used to introduce and sell in products to the various markets. Facilitates high performance of our sales reps via input on catalog and other selling tools as well as follow-up after sales conference. Collaborates with marketing team colleagues as required to ensure positioning, campaigns, and packaging accurate reflect the relevant product(s).

20% Marketing Promotion

Collaborates with the Campaign Strategist to ensure that the appropriate titles are included in campaigns. Advocates for all frontlist T and sc, and CBK and TXT titles to ensure coverage in annual campaigns. Works closely with marketing colleagues on CBK and TXT and adoption campaigns. Contributes to marketing plan creation for designated titles. Researches and analyzes market, publishing industry, and customers to inform best practices.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Minimum of three to five years related experience in marketing, communications, sales, or publishing, or an equivalent combination; ideally for a publisher or bookselling institution
  • Thorough knowledge of sales and marketing principles, strategies, techniques, and practices
  • Solid knowledge of programs, including Microsoft Office Suite and Google Product Suite, with an interest and ability in learning new software and web-based programs
  • Understanding of metadata best practices a plus
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills: proven ability to track,

    prioritize and complete work within deadlines

  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of the organization, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives,

    achievements and infrastructure

  • Enthusiasm for publishing, media, and being a part of a mission-driven workplace
  • BA or equivalent educational experience
