Rocky Nook | Acquisitions Editor

February 8, 2019

Rocky Nook is an independent publisher based in San Rafael, CA. Founded in 2006, our focus has been on publishing world-class books to help photographers master the art, craft, and technology of photography. We are proud to be the #1 U.S. publisher in the educational photography space. We have grown a lot over the last decade, and we have recently expanded our mission to include other creative topics, including graphic design, painting, sketching, typography, and more.

We are looking for someone to join us and help develop and expand our publishing program well beyond photography. We are looking for someone smart, curious, proactive, and fun to work with, who takes their job seriously but not too seriously. Someone who loves brainstorming and pursuing great book ideas, and who has a knack for matching them with talented authors to create beautiful books that truly help readers.

We are a close-knit team, and we believe in doing great work while maintaining a strong work-life balance. Being a small company, we know the value that each person can and must bring to the table. In short, we’re more interested in finding the right fit for our team than in finding someone who can check off every box below. That said, here are some of the main responsibilities the ideal candidate will have:

  • Originate, acquire, launch, and bring to market 5-8 projects per year in key areas of the list, including the categories of design, photography, typography, painting, drawing, creative hobbies, and moreStay on top of marketplace trends and determine how best to publish to the end consumer
  • Participate in weekly acquisitions team meetings; pitch and present projects at acquisitions, launch, and other meetings as needed
  • Cultivate relationships with agents, authors, artists, licensors, designers, overseas publishers, and packagers, negotiating deals and developing the best possible projects with them
  • Conduct and analyze sales research, including P&Ls and comparative titles

  • Work with authors and editorial and production teams to develop 5–8 projects from beginning to end including overall vision, TOC, specs, design, content, and layout
  • Evaluate proposals and manuscripts and provide authors with editorial feedback/development
  • Create copy for web, sales enablement, and social media as needed
  • Participate in developing marketing and publicity plans

General Skills

  • Foster exploration and the frank exchange of ideas, as well as an atmosphere of accountability and trust
  • Bring spirit, creativity, and integrity not only to our publishing but also to all business relationships, in house and out
