Sales and Marketing Assistant | Berrett-Koehler Publishers



Advance BK’s mission by helping grow the BK Professional Publishing program through sales and marketing efforts. Support our authors in their sales and marketing efforts by partnering with them to get them materials they need, answering questions they may have, and directing them to appropriate staff. Help ensure that BK colleagues and distributors have the information and materials needed to sell BK Professional books.


  • Serve as author ambassador by supporting authors in their own marketing and sales efforts, and responding to author requests for metadata updates, promotional materials, sales information, and the like
  • Set up authors and their agents and staff to receive monthly sales reports
  • Work with authors to get their approval on catalog copy, cover copy, and endorsements

SALES SUPPORT (30% of time):

  • Prepare appropriate marketing materials, such as Title Information (TI) sheets, launch forms, catalog copy, and marketing plans
  • Assist the Digital Marketing team by gathering and/or creating material needed for content marketing efforts
  • Assist in the creation of book excerpts, discussion guides, instructor guides, or other ancillary marketing material, as needed
  • Assist with gathering and creating social media materials for book launches
  • Assist with updating Amazon book pages with Amazon A+ Content for select titles

Research potential bulk buyers, text adopters, and influencers in key professional markets


Prepare/send press releases, galley letters, and email blasts, and assist with any follow-up

Create galleys for all books, and chapter excerpts (as needed)

Write blog/social media posts or content marketing pieces as needed

Create a quarterly sales/publicity update for distribution to BK staff

Build and maintain lists in the Meltwater or Hubspot databases for key professional sectors

Enter key media hits and events in the PRHPS system

TRADE SHOWS/AUTHOR EVENTS (5%): (mainly virtual in 2021)

In conjunction with the Director of Professional Publishing, plan and implement BK’s presence at in-person or virtual trade shows for professional markets

As needed, support BK’s presence at trade shows, such as ATD and Academy of Management, where BK Professional books are part of a larger BK exhibit

Attend local author events and sell books, as needed — including bringing books to the event, handling sales, returning books to the office, and reconciling the inventory and sales


  • Update title info from BK Editorial Update emails in PRHPS’S MyHouse System and CoreSource (when titles have been loaded into CoreSource)
  • Upload reviewed copy into FileMaker and MyHouse for frontlist titles
  • Check Amazon pages of BK Professional titles periodically for buy button and metadata inconsistencies


  • Update professional and bulk sales contacts in Hubspot as needed
  • Assist Director of Professional Publishing on general miscellaneous projects/tasks as needed


Participate in monthly BK Professional meetings

Participate in monthly staff meetings, monthly sales & marketing department meetings (on a voluntary basis), bi-weekly publication board meetings (on a voluntary basis), author day lunches (on a voluntary basis)

Assist in training or mentoring BK Professional interns (if needed)

Follow all company policies in Employee Handbook regarding expense reporting, company travel, benefits, workplace rules, etc.



Excellent oral and written communication skills

Creative and resourceful, with the ability to organize and manage many different responsibilities

Track record of performing responsibilities with accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and efficiency through paid and/or volunteer work

Undergraduate college degree or equivalent experience

  • Be proficient at Office Suite for Mac (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint); Filemaker Pro or other database experience, and Asana or other project management tools a plus; Hubspot or other CRM platform experience a plus
