Senior Editor/Editor | Insight Editions

Insight Editions, an innovative publishing company based in the SF Bay Area, takes great pride in making one-of-a-kind books and products. We are seeking a talented Editor to help drive our publishing program, develop content and manage projects throughout the entire editorial process. We are looking for an experienced editor with impeccable project management skills. This position will be primarily assigned to our Mandala imprint, and potentially new imprints currently in development. The ideal candidate will have experience developing and editing books with a focus in science, technology, arts and the humanities.

Required Qualifications

  • BA in English or a related field
  • A minimum of 3 years experience editing books; science, technology, arts and/or other humanities related book experience is preferred

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the project management of assigned books for the division
  • Develop and execute the editorial vision for assigned projects, and communicate that vision to design, production, sales, marketing, and other editorial staff
  • Plan, coordinate and manage the work product of assigned editorial staff, including freelancers and contractors, to ensure quality control and timeliness of projects
  • Partner and coordinate with the sales department and write B2B and B2C copy, and ensure all sales materials (TIs, covers, spreads, dummies, and layouts) are provided on time
  • Oversee, proof and edit the quality control and approval of editorial content
  • Maintain accurate schedules, budgets, specs and track changes for all assigned projects
  • Prepare, champion, and present titles at internal acquisitions, launch, and sales conferences
  • Conduct market research, identify market opportunities, and draft book proposals
  • Participate in weekly scheduling and development meetings, accurately reporting status of assigned projects
  • Develop, manage and cultivate ongoing and new vendor and partner relationships
  • Provide technical support and suggestions to design team as needed
  • Create and develop innovative solutions for the prevention or management of schedule delays and budget overruns
  • Coordinate traffic and delivery of proofs to internal or external clients
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proven knowledge of fundamental editorial disciplines and processes
  • Highly proficient in editing books; proficiency with illustrated books is preferred
  • Expert skills in copyediting.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, manage resources across multiple projects, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge and understanding with the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Highly motivated, productive, and detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills.
  • Strong knowledge of publishing processes and formats
  • Ability to mentor and guide editorial talent, prioritize work and resources, and provide timely and clear critical feedback
  • Strong knowledge of book manufacturing
  • Effective presentation skills and communication abilities in both internal and external situations, including corporate leadership, brand partners, digital agencies and internal departments
  • Highly proficient with project management
  • Highly proficient in problem solving in a fast-paced environment
  • Advanced or Expert proficiency with the following computer applications and operations systems:
    • Adobe Acrobat Professional
    • MS Office Suite
    • Filemaker (preferred, but nor required)
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure and to remain focused on goals while navigating unforeseen changes and critical feedback
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Highly detail-oriented, organized and able to prioritize projects and meet deadlines
  • Professional demeanor and ability to interact with all levels of employees and management
