Senior Production Manager – Remote, US | Hay House

Position Summary

Hay House is looking for a Senior Production Manager who will be responsible for monitoring production and manufacturing costs associated with our Book Division and strategize creative solutions for adapting to the various changes and challenges in the supply chain. As the Sr. Production Manager, you will stay current on industry trends, offer data-driven solutions, strategize effective inventory strategy, and facilitate effective communication across all channels involved in the Book Division.

Responsibilities and Expertise

  • Manage Production costs for the Book Division, regularly analyze spending trends and propose solutions to offset increasing costs and maximize profit margins.
  • Seek creative solutions to resolve problems and improve processes within the Book Division.
  • Create print volume forecasts.
  • Develop and maintain network of high-quality, trustworthy printers and material vendors.
  • Troubleshoot issues that arise pertaining to print production or delivery of product.
  • Keep manufacturing knowledge up to date and identify broader industry trends and how those trends directly or indirectly impact Hay Houses business.
  • Meet regularly with Executive Managing Editor, Editorial Director, and Art Director to identify upcoming projects.
  • Oversee an accurate database of Production data for Book Division and produce reports from the database to facilitate broader companywide understanding of production and manufacturing costs in the Book Division.
  • Work closely with our Sales team and CEO to anticipate inventory needs.
  • Track, monitor, and report work in process using project management software.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Tireless interest in compiling and analyzing granular data
  • Thorough knowledge and hands-on experience with all phases of book production, including in-depth knowledge of desktop publishing and the basic rudiments of art and design
  • Demonstrated interest in the challenges and opportunities of an ever-changing book-publishing industry with specific interest in highly designed products (card decks, cookbooks, childrens books)
  • Membership or participation in industry groups to include a network of production and manufacturing contacts working in book and card-deck manufacturing
  • Ability to interface with internal departments and external book publication/production community
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to concisely identify the dynamic parts of complex issues that most-directly impact the bottom line and business goals
  • Highly proficient in fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of the book publishing and manufacturing industry
  • Thorough familiarity with title management databases such as Biblio and project management software such as Asana strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of page layout applications, such as the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign and file preparation in Acrobat, Photoshop, and related programs)
  • Familiarity with implementing design templates
  • Demonstrated proficiency in pre-flighting files, transferring files, and related printing processes
  • Ability to effectively manage workflow with multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to think critically

Education and/or Experience

  • Theoretical knowledge typically achieved through a related four-year college experience, such as a Bachelors degree in Publishing, English, Communications, Art, Business Administration, or equivalent
  • At least five years experience working as Production Manager in book publishing
  • Experience working with overseas printers and manufacturers in the creation of tarot or oracle card decks and journals
  • Experience negotiating and producing Service Level Agreements with vendors in book and card-deck manufacturing
