Senior Publishing Technology Specialist | National Geographic Learning

Summary: As a member of the National Geographic Learning production team, the Senior Publishing Technology Specialist is responsible for publishing technology support for producing content from prototypes into the final delivery format (print or digital). The role requires a mastery of Adobe Creative Suite, prepress technologies, and digital authoring tools. It provides technical production support for product development workflows to the teams in terms of consulting, recommendations, training, process automation to increase efficiencies, and technical expertise.

Position Description: The position involves highly skilled technical prepress work, including interpreting design prototypes to create production ready templates and specifications, styling complex pages according to project specs, making pre-press corrections to art, preflighting, proofing, creating press-ready PDFs, and guides the work of ourside vendors. The Sr PubTech Specialist guides the work of outside vendors. This requires strong project management and communication skills to:

  • Clearly articulate the specifications and procedures in the creation of content
  • Ensure quality control by providing feedback for processes such as page building, template creation, file conversions, file checking, and color work
  • Troubleshoot any file issues at any stage of development

They will also consult on workflows, and make recommendations on achieving consistent and efficient results, and process automation. This role researches emerging technologies, analyzes their fit within NGL product development and integrates their use. They will master the tools, and train internal staff and vendors in their expected usage.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Vendor Management: Guides production and design vendors with respect to publishing technologies and file creation to ensure adherence to NGL guidelines, specifications, and quality expectations. Provides analysis, feedback, and troubleshooting support as needed. Communicates and updates specs and templates for changes throughout development.

Process Management: Participates in creation and execution of program guidelines in collaboration with Production and Design. Suggests updates to best practices and standards as needed. Participates in production launches to present and explain documentation. Recommends solutions for multiple versions and outputs.

Innovation and Research: Works collaboratively with various departments and managers to identify needs and research process improvements. Implements recommendations and provides staff training.

Product Development

Print Development: Transitions design print prototypes into production-ready templates and specifications. Reviews production templates built by vendors against design specs and printer/MSST specifications. Generates technically accurate files. Transitions cover designs to technically accurate mechanical builds that are print ready.

Digital Development: Transitions design mock-ups and content needs into authoring patterns and specifications. Ensures alignment to accessibility standards. Collaborates with software vendors to continuously improve authoring toolset.

File Management: Advises Production on file and server structure regardless of platform, e.g. file servers or cloud storage solutions.

Other Essential Responsibilities

  • Ensures that processes and approved standards are implemented within assigned projects.
  • Serves as an expert for multiple teams: mentoring and providing training/documentation.
  • Drives and consults on development of authoring tools to align with roadmap goals.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as needed to achieve company goals.


Experience and Training

  • BA and 4+ years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years related experience in print and/or digital production
  • Recent production, publishing technologies, and prepress experience required
  • Highly skilled and experienced with Adobe Creative Suite. Extensive experience with style sheets, layered files, templates in complex, long-document format.
  • Experience with XML, HTML5, JS, CSS and ePub
  • Must have experience with files, font management, file servers, cloud servers
  • Must have demonstrated success in learning new software

  • Able to clearly communicate complex concepts in a variety of styles and settings. Explain complex processes, provide training and constructive feedback to outside vendors, internal partners, and less experienced staff

  • Knowledge of publishing industry, or educational technology and familiarity with National Geographic Learning and Cengage Group.
