Video Developmental Editors | Manning Publications

Manning Publications Co. seeks Video Developmental Editors to work directly with video course instructors to create high-quality courses. Ideal candidates are critical thinkers who skillfully identify and articulate weaknesses in organization and teaching, adopt a coaching/mentoring role with instructors, firmly but diplomatically communicate with instructors, work both independently and in a distributed team environment, and reliably meet deadlines to produce courses on deadline. Candidates must possess passing knowledge of software concepts and technologies (such as mobile application development, responsive design, cloud computing, big data and analytics, and agile and lean development). This position uses the critical thinking skills of a book editor along with the visual teaching skills of a video content producer, and candidates can come from a video or book publishing background, but previous experience in video publishing is preferred. This is a great position for someone looking for part-time work.

primary duties

  • Coach instructors on techniques for how to teach difficult or important concepts in their video courses
  • Give constructive feedback on video modules regarding setting, instructor appearance, presentation, teaching style, pace, and visuals
  • Identify opportunities for authors to improve organization, presentation, clarity, and value to the course’s intended audience
  • Continually assess both script and video content at a high level
  • Iterate on video production process with instructors and other team members
  • Manage the course-development process so that authors are completing video units by due dates
  • Ensure that video courses adhere to Manning’s teaching guidelines
  • Provide project status and content assessment to publisher, acquisition editor, development manager and other Manning staff
  • Contribute to the ongoing assessment and improvement of editorial procedures and standards
  • Perform occasional tasks related to course marketing

required skills

  • General understanding of technical concepts, software development, and current industry trends
  • 1+ years previous substantive editing, video presentation experience, or instructional design
  • Must be available for recurring meetings and meetings with instructors or other coworkers (primarily during U.S. business hours)
  • Strong project- and time-management skills
  • Excellent organization and multitasking skills
  • Must be comfortable learning new tools relevant to video. Must be proficient in computer usage and comfortable with using online word processing and storage tools, like Google Docs and Box
  • Must work well in agile, growing environment where processes may change
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; comfortable communicating via email, Skype, and phone
  • Must have remote office setup (computer, Internet and email access, reliable phone line)

Previous experience in a video publishing environment.
