SUMMARY:London Strife: the Great Bookbinding Strike of 1786
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, bookbinders worked for longer hours and for less pay than most artisans. In the revolutionary unease of the late eighteenth century\, the London bookbinders decided to strike for a reduction in their working day. This landed the binders in trouble\, with some ending up in jail. The Great Bookbinding Strike of 1786 is an extraordinary story of labor strife\, fine bookbinding\, early trade unionism\, and the long journey towards the forty hour week. \nDominic trained at the London College of Printing (1988-90)\, and spends his time restoring antiquarian books\, creating design bindings for exhibitions and to commission\, teaching and lecturing. \n\nRiley has made about eighty design bindings to date. These are held in places such as the British Library\, the V&A\, the the Grolier Club in New York\, and the San Francisco Public Library. He has won over twenty prizes for his bindings\, including first prize – the Paul Getty Award — in Designer Bookbinders’ International Competition in 2013. He has taught and lectured across the world and spends his summer teaching at the San Francisco Center for the Book. Dominic was elected Fellow of DB in 2009 and currently serves as President of the Society of Bookbinders. \n\nCost: $10 \nWebinars are recorded and available to all registered attendees after the webinar.

SUMMARY:Binding Community: Bringing Together Diverse Peoples with the Art of Bookbinding
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to create a community book-binding experience? Want to bring attention to local events through bookbinding? Don’t know where to start? \nPlease join community organizer and artist\, Cynthia Marsh\, in a virtual webinar with the American Bookbinders Museum on how to do just that. From exploring preliminary ideas through execution\, Marsh will guide you through the process of using printing and bookbinding to build community. \nCynthia Marsh is a record keeper who begins conversations by juxtaposing collected remnants of the visual noise that crosses her path. Marsh was a founding member of the Women’s Graphic Center at the (historic) Woman’s Building in Los Angeles. From 1978-1990 she operated a freelance print and illustration studio in Los Angeles that produced Grammy-nominated album covers. She taught courses in printmaking and design at a multitude of universities and founded the Goldsmith Press and Rare Type Collection–a living museum of 19th-century wood type that encourages community members to print and post their stories.

SUMMARY:Monthly Bookbinding Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Japanese Stab Binding: \nThis beginner-friendly stab binding technique is a perfect project to start your bookbinding journey. It is generally called a Japanese stab binding but was used throughout Asia. It’s a great option for binding pre-cut sheets of paper\, no folding or gluing required. The simplicity of preparation and materials makes it the perfect “starter” project but is practiced by bookbinders of all levels. \nStab bindings are very popular in Japan dating back to the Edo period. Characteristics of this binding are an exposed spine with single sheets of paper sewn through the cover using several recognized sewing patterns; the patterns are the focal point of the binding. Since the spine is sewn through the cover the resulting book does not lay flat. \n  \nNo experience necessary\, but class-size is limited to 12 people per workshop. Reserve your spot today!

SUMMARY:A Beginner’s Bindery in a Hide-Away Box
DESCRIPTION:“When I started bookbinding\, I always felt limited by the tools I had. 30 years later I have all the best tools imaginable. Yet the bench where I make DAS Bookbinding videos is tiny and 90% of what I do is done with the tools hanging on a small wall area. I could easily have bought these tools 30 years ago. I just didn’t know what to buy and how to use them.” \nTo a hobbyist or beginner\, starting out in bookbinding may seem intimidating–so much to learn\, and so many tools. But Darryn Schneider of DAS Bookbinding wants to reassure the beginner that creating a bookbinding practice needn’t be scary. “I want new bookbinders focused on learning new skills\, making books they are proud of\, and having fun. I don’t want people feeling frustrated because they couldn’t make something for lack of a tool or material\, or even a well-organized workspace.” In this lecture Darryn–whose popular tutorials on YouTube include how-tos on bindings\, tools\, and materials–will share a set of tools and basic materials for the beginning bookbinder\, as well as some tricks and tips for workspace optimization. You can fit everything you need into a box–Darryn will show you how. \nFor 30 years Darryn Schneider has been a hobbyist bookbinder. His YouTube channel\, Adventures in Bookbinding\, has over 57\,000 subscribers.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, July 30\, when writers Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms meet for an evening of readings and conversation with Bay Area writer Cliff Winig.\n\n\nMarie Brennan  is a former anthropologist and folklorist who shamelessly pillages her academic fields for inspiration. She recently misapplied her professors’ hard work to The Night Parade of 100 Demons and the short novel Driftwood. The first book of her Hugo Award-nominated Victorian adventure series The Memoirs of Lady Trent\, A Natural History of Dragons\, was a finalist for the World Fantasy Award. Her other works include the Doppelganger duology\, the urban fantasy Wilders series\, the Onyx Court historical fantasies\, the Varekai novellas\, and over sixty short stories\, as well as the New Worlds series of worldbuilding guides. For more information\, visit swantower.com\, Twitter @swan_tower\, or her Patreon. \nAlyc Helms prefers tea (especially a really smoky Lapsang Souchong) over all other beverages. They studied folklore and anthropology what feels like a lifetime ago\, and they dabble in corsetry and costuming\, dance Scottish Highland and Irish Ceili at Renaissance and Dickens fairs\, and game in all forms of media. They sometimes refer to their work as “critical theory fanfic\,” which is a fancy way to say that they are obsessed with liminality\, gender identity\, and foxes. They are a freelance RPG writer\, a graduate of Clarion West 2012\, and have published short fiction in Beneath Ceaseless Skies\, Daily Science Fiction\, Crossed Genres\, and Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet. They are the author of the Adventures of Mr. Mystic novels from Angry Robot and\, as M.A. Carrick\, the co-author (with Marie Brennan) of the Rook & Rose trilogy from Orbit Books. SUMMARY:Hosting Word For Word
DESCRIPTION:Off the Page\nStaged readings that are the first step in Word for Word’s production process—taking a short story from the page to the stage. Join us for the first of many steps in bringing stories to the stage. \n\n“The Secret Source” by Ben Okri \nDirected by Rotimi Agbabiaka \nTwo young people discover that the water supply has been contaminated with something that is sapping the population’s ability to question those in authority and must evade smugly complacent scientists and hostile fellow citizens in their quest to find a source of true water. \nIn the words of author Ben Okri\, “the story is a slice of reality\, a fable\, a satire\, a cautionary tale\, an immaterial finger writing a warning on a wall\, a cry in the dark\, a good old-fashioned piece of speculative fiction in a tradition as old as ‘Candide’ or the Decameron\, tales that we tell one another in the twilight of strange times.” \nFree Admission – but please RSVP! Space is limited.\n\n  \nOff the Page events are free\, but we do encourage you to make a donation\, either online here or at the venue during the reading. Word For Word humbly suggest $25 for those who can afford it.\n  \n\nWORD FOR WORD Performing Arts Company performs short works of fiction in their entirety\, preserving the author’s voice and honoring her/his intent with exciting visuals and inventive staging.
