SUMMARY:SF in SF with Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, July 30\, when writers Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms meet for an evening of readings and conversation with Bay Area writer Cliff Winig.\n\n\nMarie Brennan  is a former anthropologist and folklorist who shamelessly pillages her academic fields for inspiration. She recently misapplied her professors’ hard work to The Night Parade of 100 Demons and the short novel Driftwood. The first book of her Hugo Award-nominated Victorian adventure series The Memoirs of Lady Trent\, A Natural History of Dragons\, was a finalist for the World Fantasy Award. Her other works include the Doppelganger duology\, the urban fantasy Wilders series\, the Onyx Court historical fantasies\, the Varekai novellas\, and over sixty short stories\, as well as the New Worlds series of worldbuilding guides. Together with Alyc Helms as M.A. Carrick\, she is the author of the upcoming Rook and Rose epic fantasy trilogy\, beginning with The Mask of Mirrors. For more information\, visit swantower.com\, Twitter @swan_tower\, or her Patreon. \nAlyc Helms prefers tea (especially a really smoky Lapsang Souchong) over all other beverages. They studied folklore and anthropology what feels like a lifetime ago\, and they dabble in corsetry and costuming\, dance Scottish Highland and Irish Ceili at Renaissance and Dickens fairs\, and game in all forms of media. They sometimes refer to their work as “critical theory fanfic\,” which is a fancy way to say that they are obsessed with liminality\, gender identity\, and foxes. They are a freelance RPG writer\, a graduate of Clarion West 2012\, and have published short fiction in Beneath Ceaseless Skies\, Daily Science Fiction\, Crossed Genres\, and Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet. They are the author of the Adventures of Mr. Mystic novels from Angry Robot and\, as M.A. Carrick\, the co-author (with Marie Brennan) of the Rook & Rose trilogy from Orbit Books. They can be found on Twitter @alychelms or at www.alychelms.com.

SUMMARY:Hosting Word For Word
DESCRIPTION:Off the Page\nStaged readings that are the first step in Word for Word’s production process—taking a short story from the page to the stage. Join us for the first of many steps in bringing stories to the stage. \n\n“The Secret Source” by Ben Okri \nDirected by Rotimi Agbabiaka \nTwo young people discover that the water supply has been contaminated with something that is sapping the population’s ability to question those in authority and must evade smugly complacent scientists and hostile fellow citizens in their quest to find a source of true water. \nIn the words of author Ben Okri\, “the story is a slice of reality\, a fable\, a satire\, a cautionary tale\, an immaterial finger writing a warning on a wall\, a cry in the dark\, a good old-fashioned piece of speculative fiction in a tradition as old as ‘Candide’ or the Decameron\, tales that we tell one another in the twilight of strange times.” \nFree Admission – but please RSVP! Space is limited.\n\n  \nOff the Page events are free\, but we do encourage you to make a donation\, either online here or at the venue during the reading. Word For Word humbly suggest $25 for those who can afford it.\n  \n\nWORD FOR WORD Performing Arts Company performs short works of fiction in their entirety\, preserving the author’s voice and honoring her/his intent with exciting visuals and inventive staging. SUMMARY:Linking the Past\, Forging the Future: Conservation of a Medieval Chained Binding
DESCRIPTION:In our digital age\, it’s hard to remember (or even believe) that books were once so rare and costly that they were kept chained to the shelves. But even chains cannot protect a centuries-old book from the wear of time–and many hands. When a chained medieval book in Stanford Libraries’ collection needed repair it took a group effort to conserve the book and create a model of this unusual binding structure that could stand in its place for use by scholars and researchers: a group at the intersection of scholarship\, conservation\, and craft. Join us for a virtual panel discussion with Kathleen Smith\, Aude Gabory\, and Karen Hanmer as they discuss their collaboration across disciplines; see the resulting facsimile\, and marvel at the thought\, art\, and skill that went into creating it.

SUMMARY:ABM and BCC | A Shimmer of Joy: One Hundred Children’s Picture Books in America
DESCRIPTION:Hosted/Organized by: American Bookbinders Museum and Book Club of California \nPicture books are a jewel in the crown of children’s literature. They are composed of words\, illustrations\, and the dramatically paced rhythm of pages turning in the reader’s hand. When these elements come together with creative mastery\, a surge of mind or heart can occur\, as with any form of fine art. At its most inspirational\, a picture book can provide a transporting reading experience—punctuated by shimmering moments of joy—for the children and adults who journey inside its covers. \nA Shimmer of Joy is an exciting and colorful presentation of children’s picture books published in – or imported to – America from 1900 to 2015. A Shimmer of Joy: One Hundred Children’s Picture Books in America by Chris Loker\, is the Book Club of California’s 239th publication. It was published in two editions: a Deluxe Edition of 50 copies and a Standard Edition of 200 copies. Both are on display in the current exhibit. \nChris Loker is the author of children’s books and books about children’s literature. She graduated from Stanford University and attended the Stanford Graduate School of Business. She is a former member of the board of the Book Club of California\, and currently serves on the boards of the Grolier Club\, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art\, Rare Book School at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville\, and Bring Me a Book. \nNote: Proof of vaccination and photo ID may be required for admission\, as well as a mask.
