SUMMARY:Introduction to Modern Type Design Workshop
DESCRIPTION:with Kel Troughton\nLearn to think systematically about type and make your own font in 10 weeks! (Not in or near San Francisco? See the online version of this workshop.) \n  \nDuring this 10-week in-person workshop (Wednesdays from June 12 through August 21. No class on July 3)\, you’ll learn what it takes to create your own original typefaces and gain an understanding of the methodologies and software used to produce high-quality digital type. \nWhile focusing on the techniques and best practices for designing and spacing type\, Kel will introduce you to the conceptual foundations of type design\, including proofing and testing work. Throughout the workshop you’ll learn various lessons about type\, history\, sketching\, and get weekly feedback on your projects. \nThis workshop is suitable for designers starting to think about type and for designers with some type design experience\, hoping to improve upon their skills and processes. Some experience with drawing Bézier curves (in Adobe Illustrator\, for instance) and with typography is recommended but not required. \nIf you are interested in joining Type West\, our yearlong certificate program in type design\, taking this workshop is a great way to build your type design portfolio for its competitive application process. Additionally\, by joining this in-person workshop you’ll have the added advantage of studying at Letterform Archive in San Francisco\, with in-person research access to our inspirational collection of type and lettering specimens. \nAll participants will receive a free temporary license for the Glyphs App. The number of participants is capped at 12 to allow for individual instruction.

SUMMARY:A Certain Cotta: Book-Cover Design from Buenos Aires
DESCRIPTION:with Francisco Roca\nLearn about the young graphic artist who designed book covers that would become a sensation in ’60s era Argentina\, Latin America\, and Spain. \nIn 1962\, young graphic artist Juan Ángel Cotta died in a car crash. His ongoing work project at the time\, 103 covers for Los Libros del Mirasol —one of South America’s most unique and appealingly-illustrated book collections— went into oblivion until designers Francisco Roca and Leandro Castelao envisaged assembling his piecemeal job into a single volume. During this talk\, you will have the chance to delve into the research that turned a heartfelt casual endeavour into a full editorial journey\, culminating in the first-ever book to compile Cotta’s visual legacy. \nIn the words of design critic Steven Heller: \nCotta’s work\, especially a collection of hardback books he illustrated in 1960 under the series title The Sunflower Books is one of the missing links between South American publishing and the European modernist traditions. \nPlease join us Live at the Archive for refreshments between 5:30 and 6:30. Francisco’s presentation will begin promptly at 6:30 with a Q&A following that.

SUMMARY:Salon Series 49: A Seat at the Table: Queer*+ Intersections
DESCRIPTION:with Eve Scarborough\, Jada Simone Haynes\, Mikhail of Hearts\nTo celebrate Pride month\, the Archive features a selection of work by Queer*+ designers\, curated by members of the Collections Team. \nTo celebrate Pride month and the ongoing struggles for equity\, this salon will showcase insights and perspectives of Eve Scarborough\, Jada Simone Haynes\, and Mikhail of Hearts as stewards of the Letterform Archive’s Permanent Collection through the acts of physical care\, documentation\, and audience activation. \nThey will explore the Archive’s Queer*+ intersections from a contemporary lens by considering their lived queer experiences\, personal art practices\, and how intersectional Queer*+ identities and experiences have historically been represented or overlooked in visual culture. They seek to establish A Seat at the Table\, inviting dialogue and reflection around the following questions: \n\nWhere do we see ourselves?\nHow do we confront the colonial origins of archives in the work that we do?\nHow can we honor and invite Queer*+ artists\, designers\, educators\, and practitioners to pull up a chair and share their stories\, across our past\, present\, and future?\n\nThe spread will include objects that engage both explicitly and implicitly with queerness\, through an intersectional\, expansive\, and cross-disciplinary lens. The selection will also include objects that resonate personally\, exploring queerness through structure\, content\, and language. A Seat at the Table is a call to action to challenge dominant narratives present in institutions and strive for inclusive storytelling in art and design.

SUMMARY:Multilingual Typesetting on the Web
DESCRIPTION:with Marie Otsuka\nThis workshop will cover a variety of technical techniques for typesetting multiple scripts on websites\, with a focus on CJK writing systems. \nTypesetting different languages together can be a challenge for online projects. This 2-day intensive will review HTML and CSS techniques on formatting typography for multiple scripts\, especially with East Asian languages. We will begin with the basics of using web fonts\, including an understanding of glyph subsets and fallbacks\, and move to advanced techniques in refining typography for language-specific design conventions such as vertical typesetting. Participants will need no prior knowledge of these languages for this workshop but should be prepared to dive into code. Because the presenter’s language expertise is in English and Japanese\, some examples will be based on these two scripts but technical concepts may be applied to other languages. Participants should bring their own web project with their preferred languages to apply learnings from the workshop.

SUMMARY:Putting Pencil to Pixel
DESCRIPTION:With Angy Che \n  \nUnlock the power of the iPad to create dynamic\, polished\, and punchy lettering pieces. No previous Procreate or lettering experience is required. \nIn this four day workshop (over two consecutive weekends)\, participants will learn how to bring words to life through the art of lettering. Although we’ll use the iPad and Apple Pencil as our main set of tools\, the same lessons and principles from this course can be applied to analog mediums. We’ll walk through the foundational skills that’ll enable you to create unique lettering pieces that can be applied to both personal and professional projects. \nWe will begin by laying a foundation for lettering approaches and understanding type anatomy while learning the technical side of working in Procreate. The second half of the workshop will build on that foundation through sketching and iterating on dynamic compositions and using a variety of techniques to create finished\, share-worthy lettering pieces. So whether you’re new to lettering\, Procreate\, or both\, you are welcome to join us on this four day journey!

SUMMARY:Type Revival for Period Film & TV
DESCRIPTION:Leah Spencer reveals her process of replicating period-appropriate typography for productions like “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” \nDuring the creation of movies and TV shows\, every book cover\, receipt\, storefront sign\, newspaper\, or hotel room number that you see was custom-made by a graphic designer. The aim of this work is to create design that unceremoniously melds with its setting\, and to achieve this for period productions\, type must be in both form and effect of the age. \nAs technologically-equipped graphic designers\, we experience some restrictions when we try to turn back the clock: hand-lettering that was never a typeface\, type that was never digitized\, and type that was digitized but that looks too clean. Add in the logistical and legal aspects of film and TV production and things can get pretty constrained. But there is a solution: type revival. \nJoin Leah Spencer for a look into this unique intersection of traditional craft and contemporary tools. See her process as used in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” to reproduce original mid-century type and lettering as digital fonts. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:The Hebrew Letter – a Calligrapher’s Journey
DESCRIPTION:with Izzy Pludwinski\nJoin us for a peek into a personal journey through the ancient scribal traditions and the world of modern calligraphy. \nThe Hebrew aleph-bet (technically an abjad) is one of the oldest alphabets in existence. Paleographically perhaps 3000 years old; mystically the Hebrew letters existed before the creation of the world. \nAs the language of the Hebrew bible\, it has a long\, religious scribal tradition which is taken very seriously to this day\, bound by hundreds of legal scribal requirements. It is also surrounded by mystical tradition with thousands of kabbalistic treatises being written on the secrets found within the Hebrew letter. \nIzzy Pludwinksi is a calligrapher who started out as a simple Hebrew scribe and eventually branched out into the wider world of calligraphy as an art form\, separate from all the legal requirements of the religious scribe. This lecture will venture into both worlds\, touching on mysticism\, calligraphic rhythms\, typography\, and perhaps even a bit of Zen\, all leading to the writing of the book The Beauty of the Hebrew Letter. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Salon Series 47: The Complete Commercial Artist: Making Modern Design in Japan\, 1928–1930
DESCRIPTION:with Gennifer Weisenfeld\nJoin us for a conversation with the author of our latest book\, an exploration of modernist commercial design in Japan. \nToward the end of the 1920s\, Japanese designers pursued a radical new vision for their profession. Engaging modernist and avant-garde trends from abroad\, refashioning local graphic and calligraphic forms\, and using the latest tools and techniques\, they poured fresh colors and expressive forms into all facets of consumer life\, from streetscapes to the printed page. The Complete Commercial\, a 24-volume design compendium published by the country’s leading designers\, captured the spirit of the age with thousands of playful and inventive designs. \nIn conversation with Letterform Archive Books editor Chris Westcott\, art historian Gennifer Weisenfeld discusses her new book on this remarkable document of design history\, The Complete Commercial Artist: Making Modern Design in Japan\, 1928–1930. Sharing art from the original volumes\, Weisenfeld will explore the global exchange of ideas and practices that informed designers’ new approaches to lettering\, illustration\, design\, and display.

SUMMARY:Make Icons Editable\, Animated\, and Colorful with Font Technologies
DESCRIPTION:with Wenting Zhang\nDiscover new ways to make icons customizable\, animate-able\, colorful\, and recolor-able by utilizing variable font and color font technology. \nWith the latest developments in variable and color fonts\, typography and iconography are becoming enriched! Join us for a talk with Wenting Zhang\, co-founder and CEO of Typogram\, who will share new ways to utilize variable font and color font technology for icons — to make icons customizable\, animate-able\, colorful\, and recolor-able: \nCustomizable\nVariable font tech can be seen as a bezier curve editing capability. With that\, icons can enjoy controlled editing capacity without exposing the hard-to-manipulate bezier curves and control points. \nAnimatable\nThe variable font axis can be seen as an animation timeline. With that\, icons as glyphs can go through a series of transformations and appear animated. \nColorful and Recolor-able\nArguably color font technology is better suited for icon font than for text. Icon font used to be quite limited for the lack of support for popular dual-tone icons\, which is being changed with color fonts. Not only can icon fonts be colorful\, but it also brings an easy way to recolor them to fit the brand. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all. \n

SUMMARY:Music Engraving in the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:Our first Letterform Lecture of 2024 explores the challenges facing music notation software today. \n  \nOnce the province of specialists who had undergone a long training\, the widespread availability of music notation software from the 1990s on has given everyone the ability to produce sheet music themselves. \nFor all the benefits\, this has come at a great cost. Not just a few jobs – the dedicated ‘music engraver’ now being now a near-extinct species – but to the state of the art itself. Never well-documented but passed down through the centuries from master to apprentice\, engraving is now the additional task of every student\, arranger and composer\, and any gap in expertise has become the responsibility of the software they use. \nBut worse\, in the move to an all-digital and mostly-automated world\, something else is in danger of being lost: the humanity\, the soul\, the artistry of music on the page. \nThis talk will explore some of the history of music notation and engraving\, the current state of play as well as the challenges facing the developers of notation software today. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Modern Type Design
DESCRIPTION:with Kel Troughton \n  \nDuring this 10-week online workshop\, which meets on Wednesday evenings from January 31–April 10 (no class on February 21)\, you will create your own original typefaces as you gain an understanding of the methodologies and software used to produce high-quality digital type. \nThe primary goal of this workshop is to show you how to systematically think about type and help you successfully make a font. We will focus on techniques and best practices for designing and spacing type\, introducing you to the conceptual foundations of type design\, including proofing and testing work. You will work in the Glyphs App throughout the week and upload homework before each meeting for review. Throughout the workshop you will learn various lessons about type\, history\, sketching\, and get weekly feedback on your type projects. \nThis workshop is suitable for designers just starting to think about type and for designers with some type design experience\, hoping to hone their skills and processes. Some experience with drawing Bézier curves (in Adobe Illustrator\, for instance) and with typography is recommended but not required. This is a great course for anyone interested in applying for a spot in Type West’s Postgraduate Certificate Program in Type Design. \nA free temporary license for Glyphs App will be made available to all participants. The class is capped at fifteen students to allow for one-on-one instruction.

SUMMARY:From Gutenberg to the Gallery: Five Decades of Print and Book Art
DESCRIPTION:In The Gutenberg Galaxy (1962)\, Marshall McLuhan argued that significant changes in technology would generate massive cultural transformations that will permanently alter the form and function of the book. Fundamentals of bookmaking have not changed much since the contributions of Gutenberg\, but the cultural environments in which they have been grounded\, expanded\, and received certainly have. Effects of the electronic environment\, among other things\, allowed the book form to upgrade its status as a work of art\, and ushered in the era that we now recognize as “book arts.” Opportunities accompanying technological innovations continually provide unanticipated pathways for the book arts community to learn and flourish within our print-based media ecology. \nJoin us for an evening with Harry Reese\, this year’s Lieberman lecturer\, as he recounts his years as a graduate student at Brown University when he started the literary small press\, Turkey Press\, in partnership with his wife Sandra Liddell Reese. Their work has embraced patterns of personal discovery and dedicated workmanship that led to making\, exhibiting\, and teaching – all within the relatively new context of the book considered as a contemporary work of art. This lecture will illustrate\, through the sharing of works under the Turkey Press and Edition Reese imprints\, that as the humanities have become more visual\, the contemporary artist book demands much more attention\, conversation\, and understanding than ever before from its makers\, readers\, curators\, and collectors. \nThe annual Lieberman Lecture commemorates J. Ben Lieberman (1914–1984)\, founder and first president of the American Printing History Association. The lecture is a moveable feast\, given at a different institution each year\, by a figure distinguished in the history of printing or the book arts.
