SUMMARY:Things You Didn’t Know Data Merge Could Do
DESCRIPTION:People familiar with InDesign may be familiar with the Data Merge panel\, but may not realize the potential that it holds. By taking this tool and leveraging it with several techniques\, Data Merge can become more than just a “fancy” way of mail merging. This session will demonstrate techniques that allow users to: \n\n\nautofit type for specific frame sizes within a Data Merge; \n\n\nchange colors of type\, QR codes\, and even some graphics during a data merge; \n\n\nprepare bar graphs for use with data merge; \n\n\nswapping out paragraphs or layouts during a data merge. \n\n\nBy the way\, Colin is the guy who wrote the delightfully satirical—and Insightful—“New Features in InDesign 2024 and About Time Too!” which detailed 35 new features that InDesign 2024 should have had\, but didn’t.

SUMMARY:Let's Talk Layouts
DESCRIPTION:Grids offer a structured framework for layouts that assist with the consistency and coherence of design—but most frequently they seem to adhere to a rectilinear form with placement outside of that form either seeming “random” or “breaking the grid.” \nThis informative session challenges what you already know about layout and looks at how layouts can be built with the help of other Creative Cloud applications or within InDesign natively. \n\nAbout the Presenter\nTony Harmer (a.k.a The Design Ninja) is best described as a creative utility-knife and learning-content author with a long career in design\, illustration\, photography\, video and animation. His LinkedIn Learning courses have had over 2.2 million learners and he is a popular speaker/presenter with his often-off-the-wall sessions that always provide a ton of tips\, techniques\, insights and inspirations delivered with humour and enthusiasm that is totally infectious.

SUMMARY:Can Science Inform Graphic Design?
DESCRIPTION:Tom White asks\, “How does someone go from Rocket Science to Graphic Design?” While many aspects of graphic design necessitate creativity and an artistic approach\, he bases his work and execution around a more scientific mindset. But he’s not talking about AI! \nAccording to White\, a great professor once said\, “Graphic designers are problem solvers\,” and he finds more and more each day how accurate his lesson was. No matter what the problem may be\, a graphic designer should be able to produce a relevant\, logical\, interesting\, and intellectual solution. Anything less\, according to White\, would make said professor “barf\, and go blind.” \nGraphic Design is not a thing\, rather it’s a process\, an idea\, a message that hones the fundamentals of graphic design such as: \n\n\nThe Gestalt Theory (the sum of the whole is greater than its parts). \n\n\nVerbal + Visual = Message. \n\n\nThe three factors that define a relevant and logical solution: 1) the nature of the problem\, 2) the audience\, and 3) the functional parameters). \n\n\nGood design comes from extensive research and great attention to detail\, and it always contains a solid intellectual concept. Bad design\, on the other hand\, as White’s professor so eloquently put it\, “should be nuked with the whales.” \nThe professor’s last words of encouragement were blunt: “Now go out there\, create world-class graphic design\, and knock the world on its ass.” \nAnd so\, world-class graphic designer as he is\, that is Tom White’s challenge and goal. With each new problem he solves\, he must find a way to catch the world off guard. He must find a way to disrupt its balance\, and then with one mighty blow\, send it plummeting onto its rear end. \nAbout the Presenter\nAlan Gilbertson is a freelance designer and creative director living in the Tampa Bay area of Florida\, the “Sun Coast” of the United States. A self-confessed nerd\, he loves messing with software to see if it will break\, so he has been a beta tester of various products for more than three decades\, including all of the Adobe design suite. \nAlan is an Adobe Community Expert\, a regular contributor to CreativePro Magazine and the Adobe Community Forums\, and can occasionally be found wandering the exhibition halls at design conferences looking for coffee and donuts.

SUMMARY:How to Fall in Love With Typography
DESCRIPTION:Ellen Lupton wrote the classic textbook Thinking with Type. Researching the all-new third edition of this book meant questioning everything. What assumptions are baked into the English-speaking design vocabulary? How can type education become more forgiving? What stories lurk behind basic forms such as grids\, capital letters\, reverse stress\, and typographic widows? Thinking with Type\, Third Edition drops in March 2024 (Princeton Architectural Press). This talk will offer some tips\, tools\, and insights for working with type.

SUMMARY:How Extensibility\, Express\, and AI will transform InDesign Workflows in 2024
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, Max Dunn shares the new features of InDesign 2024\, and will introduce Adobe Express\, exploring the many ways that Express and AI tools such as Adobe Firefly can both interoperate with\, and augment\, InDesign workflows. \nHe will discuss the Unified eXtensibility Platform or UXP. This significant new technology took a lot of brilliant people a long time to implement\, and brings InDesign’s extensibility into the modern age\, using the latest JavaScript along with REACT support and debugging tools. \nAdobe Express—Adobe’s answer to Canva—has also been blessed with sophisticated new extensibility tools (as well as AI features based on Adobe Firefly). There are two Express SDKs. The Add-in SDK lets you add features to Express. The Embed SDK lets you include Express in your applications. \nNow developers can take Adobe’s creative tools to new levels. For instance\, Max’s company\, Silicon Publishing\, has connected Express to its InDesign-based document editor. This means that users can now edit a document in a web browser\, shell out to Express to create (or process) content\, and add it back to the document\, saving it to InDesign. \nIn delving into the new creative capabilities made possible by Adobe Express and Adobe Firefly\, Max will also discuss AI and how Adobe’s offerings combine to empower modern publishing workflows. Learn how to choose between InDesign and Express\, as well as how to use the two applications together\, integrating generative AI from Adobe and others to best advantage in InDesign-centric publishing processes.

SUMMARY:Efficient and Accessible InDesign Practices Most Designers Don't Use
DESCRIPTION:Most InDesign users—even designers who’ve been using it for 20 years—don’t use the software to its potential. That means they unknowingly waste a lot of time doing things inefficiently. Understanding the features of InDesign and knowing how to do things properly will not only save you time but actually go a long way toward accessibility. \nFind out many efficient and accessible InDesign practices that will save you time and help you make your documents more accessible. \nLearn what accessibility means when it comes to documents\, why accessibility is important for designers\, and how accessibility can actually help you as a designer. In addition\, hear common myths and misconceptions related to accessible documents. \nAbout the Presenter\nColleen Gratzer is an award-winning designer with more than 26 years of experience in graphic design and web design and development. Since 2016\, she has specialized in accessibility. She has provided accessibility training to the U.S. Department of the Interior\, at CreativePro events and appeared on many podcasts. Through Creative Boost\, she teaches plain-English accessibility to designers and developers and hosts the Design Domination podcast. Through Gratzer Graphics\, she provides design and accessibility services. She is a member of the IAAP.

SUMMARY:InDesign Goes to Prison
DESCRIPTION:Of all the things people in prison might be doing\, chances are learning InDesign doesn’t immediately come to mind. But it did for Michael Santos and\, through Prison Professors the organization he founded\, incarcerated individuals now have an additional\, if unlikely\, pathway to success. \nSantos is passionate about creating a supportive and rehabilitative environment within correctional facilities. By focusing on the acquisition of practical skills\, he and his organization provide a sense of purpose and direction for incarcerated individuals. Engaging in creative pursuits like graphic design serve as a positive outlet for self-expression\, fostering a sense of accomplishment and boosting self-esteem. \nEquipping incarcerated individuals with InDesign skills enhances their prospects for successful reintegration into society. By developing a portfolio of their work\, they can showcase their talent and skills to potential employers. But since former prisoners might not immediately find willing employers\, InDesign also opens an income opportunity while working from home. \nThrough graphic design\, incarcerated individuals can not only learn how to use visuals to communicate ideas but also to write more effectively. With these marketable skills\, individuals who have paid their debt to society are better positioned to secure employment\, reduce recidivism rates\, and become contributing members of their communities. \nYou will learn: \n\n\nWhat InDesign skills are taught to people in prison. \n\n\nSteps we can take with InDesign to lower intergenerational cycles of recidivism. \n\n\nReal-life examples of formerly incarcerated people who have made good through InDesign. \n\n\nHow the graphic design community can make a bigger impact on the lives of people in prison. \n\n\nWhy mass incarceration represents one of the greatest social injustices of our time. \n\n\nPathways to bringing courses into jails and prisons across America.

SUMMARY:InDesign in Architecture and Landscape Design
DESCRIPTION:How about InDesign for things that grow? Or InDesign for places to work or to live in? \nIn this presentation\, Sam Luo\, a landscape designer\, will discuss the various ways that InDesign is utilized in the fields of architecture\, landscape architecture\, and urban design. The focus will be on client presentations\, presentations to the city\, scaled drawings\, and the process of preparing these drawings from AutoCAD to PDF presentations. \nSam will begin with an overview of InDesign’s capabilities and how it can be used in combination with other software such as Photoshop\, CAD\, and 3D programs like Rhino. He will also discuss how InDesign can be used to create presentations for city officials\, zoning boards\, and other stakeholders. The presentation will then shift to the use of InDesign for creating scaled drawings\, what they are\, and why it’s imperative to have scaled drawings in a presentation format through InDesign. Throughout the presentation\, Sam will share real-world examples of how they have used InDesign in their own work as a landscape designer in a multidisciplinary firm. \nAttendees will come away with a better understanding of the ways that InDesign can be used to streamline the design process not only for work related to architecture\, but for any field that requires polished and professional presentations. \nAbout the Presenter\nYu hang (Sam) Luo is a landscape designer based in San Francisco working with architects and engineers to create public and private spaces around the world. After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of British Columbia in Canada\, Sam moved south to complete his Master of Landscape Architecture degree at the University of California\, Berkeley. He has had a chance to work in multidisciplinary design firms in China\, Canada\, and the U.S. and has acquired almost a decade’s worth of experience working with and through the suite of Adobe products. In his free time\, Sam runs his own YouTube channel teaching various skills relevant to the education of students in built environment disciplines\, including InDesign. His channel currently has over 16\,000 subscribers and 1.5 million total video views.

SUMMARY:A Fresh Take on Interactivity in InDesign
DESCRIPTION:InDesign has a rich toolset for adding a wide variety of interactivity to your documents. But to use these interactive features well\, sometimes you need to think a little differently. In this session\, we will dig into the “how-to” to produce a series of interactive effects; hyperlinks\, pop-ups\, rollovers\, multi-state objects\, slideshows\, buttons and more. We’ll also explore the different formats available to export your document out of InDesign\, and the pros and cons of each. If you’ve tried InDesign’s interactive features and found them frustrating\, or have heard clients ask\, “can we make that interactive” but don’t know where to start\, join Laurie in this fast paced session and take a fresh look.

SUMMARY:Historical Black Publications Inspire Contemporary InDesign Projects
DESCRIPTION:Silas Munro and his company\, Polymode\, use InDesign and other modern tools of graphic design to create award-winning projects from book design to museum displays. But what animates him? What are his light bulb moments? How does he do it? \nNo easy answer\, of course. But among his influences are the rich lineages of publications representing many facets of Black life\, from the 1900–1919 Colored American Magazine to the iconic oeuvre of the Johnson Publishing Company’s Ebony and Jet. In this presentation\, Munro will explore a selection of significant Black publications from the 20th century through the design of their layouts into their cultural relevance. He will talk about how these histories inspire Polymode’s poetic research process when applied to book design and his work as a design historian.
