SUMMARY:Copyediting Today: The Niceties and Not-So-Niceties
DESCRIPTION:An Open and Fun Forum on Pronouns\, Short Attention Spans\, and Whatever Else Makes You Crazed and Confused.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAre the rules of copyediting and language usage changing as our culture changes? Of course they are! But how fast\, and in a good direction? \nThis PPN Professional Development session aims to provide everyone a chance to rant\, bemoan\, prescribe\, and plead about whatever sets them off. Think about arguments you’ve had with authors and marketers and offer up your experience to the group for comment. If we don’t change minds and hearts\, we’ll at least let you vent your frustrations before a very sympathetic audience! \nThis session will encourage audience participation\, and to get things started we’ll have some very brief comments by two top-notch—and very opinionated—copyeditors. \n\n\n\n\nGigi Mark started her career as an editorial assistant at Benjamin-Cummings/Addison-Wesley\, working on chemistry textbooks\, and eventually moved into the developmental editing department there as an associate editor. After a few detours into writing—public relations and marketing—she returned to book publishing\, gratefully. She spent fifteen years as a production editor at Jossey-Bass Publishers\, moonlighting as a copyeditor and proofreader\, before landing in scholarly publishing at Stanford University Press\, which was her objective all along. She has been with SUP since 2013. \nChansonette Buck is the owner and executive editor of Appaloosa WordCraft\, which provides research\, writing\, and editing for a wide range of organizational clients—mostly public policy think tanks and nonprofits. She is also a published\, award-winning poet. She holds a PhD in English from the University of California\, Berkeley.

SUMMARY:Spine Design with John Berry
DESCRIPTION:Maybe you can’t judge a book by its cover\, but in a bookstore we judge most of them first by their spines. With most new books—not the ones lying out on tables or prominently displayed with their covers out\, but the ones lining the shelves—the spine is all we see. The beautiful\, dramatic cover\, upon which great effort and sometimes even expense may have been lavished\, never gets seen if a browsing book buyer doesn’t reach out and pull the book off the shelf. \nYou must register to attend and to be sent a link of the recording.

SUMMARY:Winning Book Designs
DESCRIPTION:Designers Tim Green and Molly von Borstel of Faceout Studio are the source of a number of award-winning book covers\, including their entries at the PPN 2023 Book Show. In this virtual event\, they discuss their process for creating these designs. They will cover the roles of inspiration\, trends\, and other resources in planning and executing great book design. They’ll also discuss how an effective design transmittal can foster collaboration and communication\, and how to manage production expectations. You can expect to come away with a great sense of a typical day in the work life of a great design team that will inspire your own work. \n  \nMolly von Borstel graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design and moved to Central Oregon to join Faceout Studio in 2019. Since then she has fallen in love with the visual storytelling aspect of the job\, and the endless adventures the area has to offer. She has a hard time sitting still\, so when she’s not designing books\, find her anywhere but behind a desk! \n  \nTim Green graduated from Northern Arizona University in 2002\, and he has been designing books and brands ever since. His work has been recognized by the AIGA\, Print Magazine\, the National Advertising Federation\, New York Book Show\, Graphis\, and Chuck Norris (true story). Tim is the creative director at Faceout Studio and the co-owner and creative director of Molt Brands\, a newly minted design business specializing in brand identity. When he is not at his desk designing\, he is most likely to be found at home\, with his lovely wife and 3 children. If he’s not with them\, it’s a safe bet you’ll find him at a coffee shop\, probably designing something.

SUMMARY:AI for Writers with Nina Schuyler
DESCRIPTION:Learn to use ChatGPT3 as a tool to help your creative process\, and avoid pitfalls. Great for authors and anyone in publishing. \nEvery month there seems to be a new explosion in AI that reverberates in business\, medicine\, healthcare\, education\, and writing. While writers are concerned about AI’s predatory behavior\, writers can learn to use it as a tool to help their creative process. \nIn this session\, you’ll learn how to use ChatGPT 3.5 to assist with brainstorming\, drafting\, editing\, and copyediting. You’ll understand the value of writing specific prompts and the need to refine the prompt. You’ll also learn what pitfalls to avoid\, especially if used as a research tool. Nina will show you several ways to interact with ChatGPT to come up with story ideas\, plot points\, tone\, and style. \nNina Schuyler is the author of Afterword\, about Virginia\, a female pioneer in AI who builds the voice of her beloved husband. When he begins to do seemingly unspeakable things\, she must decide whether to keep him or kill him. Nina teaches creative writing at Stanford Continuing Studies and the University of San Francisco. Her novel\, The Translator\, was a finalist for the William Saroyan International Writing Prize; her novel\, The Painting\, was a finalist for the Northern California Book Award. Her short story collection\, In This Ravishing World\, won the Prism Prize for Climate Literature and the W.S. Porter Prize and will be published in July 2024.

SUMMARY:What’s the Right Paper for Your Book Printing Job?
DESCRIPTION:Choosing the best paper for your book is an often confusing and sometimes overwhelming process that carries big impacts: cosmetic\, economic\, environmental\, and more. Recent changes in the paper market have impacted prices\, formats\, and schedules. \n\nWondered why paper is so expensive?\nOr how to evaluate “sustainability” when choosing paper for your project?\nWhich is better: FSC\, or PCW\, or ECF?\nAnd what do these acronyms even mean?\n\nBook paper specialist Bill Rojack will guide you through today’s paper market\, highlighting what’s changed and where it’s going. He will provide perspective on best practices and offer practical strategies for sustainable sourcing of this volatile but critical publishing component. \nBill Rojack is Vice President of Sales at MIDLAND\, a leading paper procurement and distribution company. With more than 25 years of experience in the paper business\, he specializes in sourcing and developing paper products and programs for many markets\, with a unique concentration on publishing. Bill’s personal interest in environmental stewardship drew him to an early adoption of now-popular sustainability trends in the paper sector. This interest has also provided Bill a unique opportunity to develop aggressive but achievable client procurement strategies in collaboration with global paper manufacturers and supply chain partners.
