DESCRIPTION:by Coleen Curry \n  \nThe Pianel binding is a modern twist on binding structures that use metal rods at the joint\, more commonly known as piano hinges. The ‘Pianel’ structure designed by Ben Elbel uses the piano hinge as a main structural and visual feature with the piano hinge tucked away in a neat\, nifty construction\, leaving only two clean vertical lines on the outside separating the spine and boards. Shiny dots of polished brass rods complete the head and tail. \nThe process behind the result is simple but requires precision and planning. The book is a flat back with two paper covers\, however the structure can be made with leather or cloth. Careful attention to detail and precision is essential.

SUMMARY:A Radical Alteration: Women’s Studio Workshop as a Sustainable Model for Art Making
DESCRIPTION:In her seminal 1971 essay\, Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists? (link is external)Art historian Linda Nochlin examines the conditions of art-making that have prevented women and BIPOC artists from achieving the status of artistic “greatness” that has long been exclusively reserved for white male artists. Written at the height of the second-wave Feminist movement at a time when women artists were beginning to organize as collectives\, Nochlin’s essay implores them to work toward altering these conditions by “taking part in the creation of institutions in which clear thought—and true greatness—are challenges open to anyone\, man or woman\, courageous enough to take the necessary risk\, the leap into the unknown.”\nAs one of the few remaining arts organizations devoted to women-identifying artists from this period of cultural reckoning\, Women’s Studio Workshop (WSW)(link is external) can be viewed as a model for radical change. Founded in 1974 by artists Ann Kalmbach\, Tatana Kellner\, Anita Wetzel\, and Barbara Leoff Burge\, WSW has grown from a grass-roots organization to an invaluable institution that serves women and trans\, intersex\, nonbinary\, and genderfluid artists. Its longevity is due to the original vision of its founders\, who developed a series of programs that provided crucial support to artists while also contributing to the organization’s sustainability. One of these programs is its Artists’ Book imprint\, which has been a focus of WSW’s Artist-in-Residence program since 1981.\nA Radical Alteration: Women’s Studio Workshop as a Sustainable Model for Art Making looks at the organization’s rich history as a proponent of book arts for marginalized communities in the U.S. Through artists’ books\, printed materials\, ephemera\, and archival materials\, the exhibition looks at how the organization’s policies\, programming\, and operations have evolved over the last fifty years\, creating a space where the conditions of art making and institutional support are in service to a sustainable and more equitable art ecosystem.

SUMMARY:Paper Is People: Decolonizing Global Paper Cultures
DESCRIPTION:Paper Is People: Decolonizing Global Paper Cultures\, co-curated by Tia Blassingame and Stephanie Sauer\, offers a new definition of paper­ within a global and decolonial framework. Featuring works by local\, national\, and international artists\, this exhibition explores the vital role substrates play in human communities and how meaning is made from what we might call paper and papermaking. \nViewed together\, the works on display seek to open a conversation around what paper is across cultures today: a vessel for collective memory\, a body\, a site of meaning\, a living ancestor\, and a form of cultural survival and resistance. To appreciate global paper cultures in a decolonial context\, it is important to consider definitions of paper that move beyond those created and sanctioned by imperial powers. In the Indigenous and oral cultures represented here\, baskets\, tapestries\, and other handmade substrates act as vessels and embodiments of culture and memory. Some even hold status as animate members of their community. DESCRIPTION:About the Festival:\nThe San Francisco Center for the Book’s annual Roadworks Steamroller Printing Festival is an all-day public printmaking and book arts extravaganza that includes free hands-on printmaking and book arts activities\, demonstrations\, vendors\, open house\, and more. \nAbout Steamroller Printing:\nWith roots going back hundreds of years\, relief printing — a process where a protruding surface is inked and brought into contact with paper – is one of the oldest methods of printing illustrations in books. \nEach year at the Roadworks Steamroller Printing Festival we celebrate this facet of book arts history in the biggest\, most spectacular way we can think of: by printing linocuts using a 7-ton 1924 Buffalo Springfield steamroller  — provided by our friends Roots of Motive Power(link is external) — and the road surface of Rhode Island Street as an enormous makeshift printing press! A team of featured artists\, printers and steamroller operators create large-scale Classic print and smaller-scale Personal prints (details below) during the Festival. \nClassic Prints and Personal Prints are literally “print-on-demand”; they are available only during the daylong event and are limited edition. Each print purchased during SFCB’s Roadworks event helps raise funds that directly benefit San Francisco Center for the Book\, our workshops\, exhibitions\, and our free public events (like Roadworks!) \nThe Roadworks Steamroller Printing Festival has become a popular tradition in the Do.Re.Mi (Dogpatch-Potrero-Hill-Mission) Arts District of San Francisco\, attracting printmaking\, artist book\, printing\, and general art enthusiasts of all ages.

Nicholas is the papermaking specialist at the University of Iowa Center for the Book\, where he lectures and manages the Oakdale paper research facility. Nicholas is an active researcher and practitioner of traditional and non-traditional papermaking processes. For six years he lived and worked in Echizen\, Japan — an area with over 1\,500 years of papermaking history — and continues to maintain an active relationship with the papermaking community there. Nicholas’ studio work responds to the discipline of papermaking itself\, thereby engaging with aesthetics\, time\, material\, movement\, and personal narrative. Liberty at the opening of her latest exhibition Craft & Conceptual Art: Reshaping the Legacy of Artists’ Books \nLight refreshments will be served; opening remarks at 7 pm. \nAbout the exhibition: Craft & Conceptual Art: Reshaping the Legacy of Artists’ Books focuses on the intertwined legacies of book art centers across the US whose primary goal has been to teach the craft practices of book arts\, as well as other institutions focused on distribution and collecting. Tracing the foundation and production of book art organizations across the US—including Center for Book Arts in 1974\, Printed Matter and Franklin Furnace in 1976\, Minnesota Center for Book Arts in 1983\, and San Francisco Center for the Book in 1996—this exhibition shows craft and conceptual art not to be opposites\, but rather two ends of a spectrum of book art practices. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog featuring additional contributions by Sur Rodney (Sur)\, David Senior\, Kayleigh Perkov\, and Tara Aisha Willis\, and a selection of reprinted historical texts. Catalogs will be available for purchase at the opening reception.

SUMMARY:Celebrating 2020 Vision & SFCB's Design Binding Intensive Students
DESCRIPTION:This event celebrates the conclusion of SFCB’s month-long Design Binding Intensive workshop\, which took place in July 2022. Workshop instructor Dominic Riley will give a brief talk; this year’s student cohort will share their completed fine bindings and stories related to creating their individual works of art.  \n2020 was the one-hundredth anniversary of the Society of Wood Engravers(link is external). To mark the occasion\, Pat Randle of the Nomad Press (link is external)collaborated with collector Nigel Hamway to create this remarkable book. In an edition of 340 copies\, 2020 Vision is being hailed as one of the most important private press books of our time. Hamway commissioned nineteen contemporary artists to create a new engraving\, also asking them to choose a historical artist who has inspired them. Additionally\, Hamway provided original blocks from his own collection for the printing of the book; Oak Knoll Press writes about 2020 Vision “The result\, printed by Nomad Letterpress at the Whittington Press\, places the engravings of twentieth-century greats – John Farleigh\, John Nash\, Monica Poole\, Geoffrey Wales\, Gertrude Hermes et al. – alongside today’s artists and presents the viewer with a snapshot of the changing nature of the engraver’s craft.”  \nOver the course of SFCB’s month-long immersive class\, students worked through the steps involved in making a fine design binding in a small group setting. In-class lessons addressed complex design execution\, leather decoration\, creative gold tooling\, and box making. Additionally\, workshop students worked closely with instructor Dominic Riley\, acquiring tips and tricks of the trade garnered from Riley’s thirty years as a fine binder\, conservator\, artist\, teacher\, and exhibitor. \n*Masks are encouraged but not required at SFCB events.

Ely introduces gallery visitors to Ely’s extraordinary version of world-building. Drawing from traditional fine binding\, printmaking\, and manuscript books\, Timothy C. Ely has developed his own hybrid ways of creating work\, all the while remaining true to his artistic vision. The techniques and materials of fine bookbinding are immediately apparent in his work; by pushing these traditional aspects in new directions\, the resulting works inspire and astonish.
