SUMMARY:The Epicenter: Rita Chang-Eppig with Carolina De Robertis
DESCRIPTION:Join Litquake’s Epicenter as we help launch Rita Chang-Eppig’s debut novel\, Deep as the Sky\, Red as the Sea\, a riveting\, roaring adventure story about a legendary Chinese pirate queen\, her fight to save her fleet from the forces allied against them\, and the dangerous price of power! \nWhen Shek Yeung sees a Portuguese sailor slay her husband\, a feared pirate\, she knows she must act swiftly or die. Instead of mourning\, Shek Yeung launches a new plan: immediately marrying her husband’s second-in-command\, and agreeing to bear him a son and heir\, in order to retain power over her half of the fleet. But larger threats loom. The Chinese Emperor has charged a brutal\, crafty nobleman with ridding the South China Seas of pirates\, and the Europeans–tired of losing ships\, men\, and money to Shek Yeung’s alliance–have new plans for the area. Even worse\, Shek Yeung’s cutthroat retributions create problems all their own. As Shek Yeung navigates new motherhood and the crises of leadership\, she must decide how long she is willing to fight\, and at what price\, or risk losing her fleet\, her new family\, and even her life. An unmissable portrait of a woman who leads with the courage and ruthlessness of our darkest and most beloved heroes. Rita appears here in conversation with author Carolina De Robertis. Books for sale from Bookshop West Portal. FREE\, $5-10 suggested donation

SUMMARY:Epicenter: MariNaomi with Grace Loh Prasad
DESCRIPTION:Join Litquake’s Epicenter as we help launch MariNaomi’s new graphic memoir\, I Thought You Loved Me\, a multimedia exploration of the expectations of friendship\, the unreliability of memory\, and the struggle to let go. \n  \nI Thought You Loved Me sifts through a meditative ghost story of sorts\, taking the form of a scrapbook-esque investigation into why a close friendship from the cartoonist’s youth abruptly ended. Mari and Jodie meet in high school in the 80’s. Both are bisexual outsiders\, and each troubled in their own way. A 14-year friendship follows. Boyfriends come and go. When Jodie ghosts Mari in 2001\, Mari is haunted. Years later\, they search social media and their own journals for clues. Though some questions are answered\, Mari is equally mystified by their own youthful insecurities and relationships. All this is told through a captivating collage of cartoons\, photos\, and text\, resulting in an all too human portrait of a relationship. \n\nFREE\, $10-15 suggested donation (pre-registration required)

SUMMARY:The Epicenter: Andrey Kurkov with Olga Zilberbourg
DESCRIPTION:Litquake is honored to present Ukraine’s most well-known writer\, Andrey Kurkov\, and his newest release in English\, Diary of an Invasion (Deep Vellum)\, a collection of writings and broadcasts from the frontlines of a horrendous 21st-century war. Throughout the Russian assault\, Kurkov has lived in Kyiv and in the remote countryside\, spending the sleepless nights of continuous bombardment delivering the truth about this atrocity to the world. In the process\, he has become an important voice for his people\, contributing satirical commentary to international media\, raising money for charities\, and speaking at crowded halls in the capitols of Europe. His work is frequently compared to Vonnegut\, Kafka\, and Murakami. He appears here in conversation with Russia-born author Olga Zilberbourg\, followed by book sales and signing.

SUMMARY:The Epicenter: Taleen Voskuni with Jen Siraganian
DESCRIPTION:Litquake’s Epicenter is excited to launch our Spring 2023 season\, with Sorry\, Bro\, the debut novel by Bay Area author Taleen Voskuni. This vibrant and heartfelt queer rom-com\, set amidst the current San Francisco tech community\, follows a young Armenian-American woman as she rediscovers her roots and embraces who she really is. \nWhen Nareh Bedrossian’s non-Armenian boyfriend gets down on one knee and proposes to her in front of a room full of drunken tech boys\, she realizes it’s time to find someone who shares her idea of romance. Her mother\, armed with plenty of mom-guilt and a spreadsheet of Facebook-stalked Armenian men\, convinces Nar to attend “Explore Armenia\,” a month-long series of events in the city. But it’s not the mom-approved playboy doctor or the wealthy engineer who catch Nar’s eye—it’s Erebuni\, a woman as immersed in the witchy arts as she is in preserving Armenian identity. Suddenly\, with Erebuni as her wingwoman\, the events feel like far less of a chore\, and much more of an adventure. Who knew cooking up kuftes together could be so…sexy? Taleen Voskuni appears in conversation with Los Gatos Poet Laureate Jen Siraganian.
