SUMMARY:From Gutenberg to the Gallery: Five Decades of Print and Book Art
DESCRIPTION:In The Gutenberg Galaxy (1962)\, Marshall McLuhan argued that significant changes in technology would generate massive cultural transformations that will permanently alter the form and function of the book. Fundamentals of bookmaking have not changed much since the contributions of Gutenberg\, but the cultural environments in which they have been grounded\, expanded\, and received certainly have. Effects of the electronic environment\, among other things\, allowed the book form to upgrade its status as a work of art\, and ushered in the era that we now recognize as “book arts.” Opportunities accompanying technological innovations continually provide unanticipated pathways for the book arts community to learn and flourish within our print-based media ecology. \nJoin us for an evening with Harry Reese\, this year’s Lieberman lecturer\, as he recounts his years as a graduate student at Brown University when he started the literary small press\, Turkey Press\, in partnership with his wife Sandra Liddell Reese. Their work has embraced patterns of personal discovery and dedicated workmanship that led to making\, exhibiting\, and teaching – all within the relatively new context of the book considered as a contemporary work of art. This lecture will illustrate\, through the sharing of works under the Turkey Press and Edition Reese imprints\, that as the humanities have become more visual\, the contemporary artist book demands much more attention\, conversation\, and understanding than ever before from its makers\, readers\, curators\, and collectors. \nThe annual Lieberman Lecture commemorates J. Ben Lieberman (1914–1984)\, founder and first president of the American Printing History Association. The lecture is a moveable feast\, given at a different institution each year\, by a figure distinguished in the history of printing or the book arts.

SUMMARY:Expand Your Typographic Potential on the Web
DESCRIPTION:with Marie Otsuka\nDuring this hands-on workshop using foundational web languages\, we will explore typographic expression on the web.\n  \nThis four-week workshop (running Thursday evenings from September 7 —28) is intended for designers new to typography in the browser and will cover how to control typography on the web. From standard typesetting to experimental techniques\, we will learn various ways to work with digital type — ranging from loading a webfont to animating variable fonts. We will approach the browser as a creative medium by developing a single-serve website that demonstrates intentional typography\, in both design and functionality. Instruction will cover ways to control visual composition and basic interactivity on the web\, using HTML & CSS. Participants will need no prior knowledge of these languages for this workshop but should be prepared to dive into coding. \n  \nMarie Otsuka is a designer and programmer working on fonts\, websites\, tools\, and books. She currently draws typefaces and develops type-oriented tools at Occupant Fonts\, while working with a range of organizations and artists as an independent web developer and graphic designer. Marie has taught various web/type-related courses at Rhode Island School of Design\, California College of the Arts\, Parsons The New School\, and the School of Visual Arts.

Dole will review a brief history of San Francisco’s graffiti scene and focus primarily on the importance of having a handstyle. \nSan Francisco has a legendary graffiti culture and scene responsible for some of the most prolific handstyles that are now emulated around the world. \nThrough her lens as a close loved one\, Dole will provide a glimpse into the life and graffiti career of one legend in particular: Leonard “Jade” Liu. Sharing work from Jade’s archives\, Dole will bring to light important understanding of the handstyle master himself. \n\nKate Dole is the former co-owner of Art Primo SF\, a graffiti art supply store of the successful Seattle-based ecommerce company Artprimo.com. A very close loved one of Leonard “Jade” Liu and patron of the graffiti scene for the past 20 years\, Dole shares her personal insights on the history of the Bay Area graffiti scene and legendary life of Jade through oral history.

She has earned three Honorable Mention awards from Marin Museum of Contemporary Arts Altered Books Show. \nDorothy was a Master Educator for the San Francisco Fashion Incubator (2011 – 2018) and has been teaching various arts and crafts continually since 2010\, including for San Francisco Center for The Book\, where she leads various bookmaking and botanical printing workshops. She has led workshops all around California\, Florida\, Mexico\, and Portugal.

DESCRIPTION:with Angie Wang\nDeepen your understanding of the typographic niceties of setting text—from the letter to the page.\\nThe text block is fundamental to creating any typographic system\, whether on the page or on screen. But what typeface to use and at what size? How do we determine line length and leading? And what about readability and hierarchy? \nOver the course of four Wednesday evenings (July 12 through August 2)\, this in-person workshop will examine typographic details and overarching principles\, from the letter to the page. It will begin by considering the interdependence between type size\, leading\, line length\, ragging\, and justification and use resources\, like Letterform Archive’s library of historic type specimen books. The course will be taught using Adobe InDesign\, Illustrator\, and Photoshop. SUMMARY:Inventing the Alphabet: Origin Stories to Forensic Evidence with Johanna Drucker
DESCRIPTION:Accounts of the origins of the alphabet contribute to the broad history of ideas. Many vivid intellectual traditions have flourished\, and some have been set aside\, discredited by “modern” scientific methods of archaeology and forensic science. Turning our attention to these varied lineages\, we see not only a history of the alphabet\, but also different modes of knowledge production and transmission. \nThe alphabet was invented by Semitic speakers in the ancient Near East around four thousand years ago\, and then spread worldwide. But the first text that says anything about its history comes from the Greek historian Herodotus\, and his description of the letters—a gift from the Phoenician Cadmus—contains no images. How can we know what letterforms Herodotus saw in these inscriptions? Similarly\, Biblical scholars seeking the “original” letters in the Tablets received by Moses had no physical remains to examine. Antiquarians sought long and hard before archaeologists in the 19th century discovered remains of the earliest alphabetic marks. Along the way\, erudite studies of magical alphabets and exotic scripts also found their way into the study of the origins of letters. \nLetterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library\, where events are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Salon Series 37: Recovering the Forgotten Women of Metal Type Design with Bethany Qualls
DESCRIPTION:Dig into overlooked design history and get a sneak peek at Letterform Archive’s forthcoming research hub on women in metal type.\nEver wonder who originally designed your favorite typefaces? Many of the fonts we use today (such as Futura\, Helvetica\, Baskerville) originated in the metal type era (late 1800s to 1950s) when hot metal typesetting became the norm for printing\, revolutionizing what had been a mostly manual process for centuries. Much of today’s typographic design relies on norms from this period when Linotype and Monotype dominated. Yet\, with few exceptions\, women’s contributions in the metal type era have mostly been erased or ignored. \nFor this Salon\, Bethany Qualls takes us on a deep dive into these often-overlooked women and their contributions to type history. Even though others have researched early women type designers\, no single\, publicly accessible resource exists to synthesize all of what we do know. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at her role as a Mellon Public Scholar in creating Letterform’s forthcoming finding aid and research hub which aims to fill this gap. Highlights will include examples of type specimens from the LA collection\, what’s been left out of most English language resources thus far\, tips on how to research in languages you don’t speak written in alphabets you can’t read\, and the project’s future phases. \n  \nOn-site and online.

DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception for \n Strikethrough: Typographic Messages of Protest\, a collection of over one hundred objects that chart a typographic chant of resistance across more than a century of protest movements. The exhibition showcases typographic anger and agency as seen in the streets\, on the printed page\, and even on the bodies of demonstrators. \nThis collaboration between Polymode’s Silas Munro and Letterform Archive’s Stephen Coles began during the upswell of the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. SUMMARY:Letterform Archive | Salon Series 33: Adobe Hidden Treasures Revisited
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, Céline Hurka and Hidetaka Yamasaki worked on interpreting historical Bauhaus alphabets as digital fonts\, in the context of the “Adobe Hidden Treasures” project. Céline worked on a design called Alfarn\, which is based on a hand-lettered poster by Alfred Arndt from 1923. Hide digitized a design based on a lettering sketch by Carl Marx. \nAfter a few years\, Hide and Céline took the chance to revisit these projects\, and added new features and styles to these digital interpretations. In this Salon\, Céline and Hide will guide us through the discoveries they made while working with original alphabets\, the routes they took to ensure authenticity\, and what they learned along the way.

SUMMARY:Letterform Archive | Salon Series 32: 36 Days of Type\, Paper Sculpture Edition with Zai Divecha
DESCRIPTION:Hosted/Organized by: Letterform Archive \nIn 2019\, San Francisco artist Zai Divecha created 36 paper sculpture letters and numbers for the annual 36 Days of Type challenge. This fast-paced design competition was the artist’s first foray into letterforms and typography. The resulting sculpture installation\, Quiet Type\, was selected as one of six winners by Adobe\, the competition sponsor\, and was later acquired by Letterform Archive for their permanent collection. \nIn this talk\, the artist will discuss how she went about creating each paper sculpture\, the relationships between letterforms and sculptural elements\, and how this project shaped her subsequent bodies of work.
