SUMMARY:Python for Visual Designers
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of Python in the free MacOS application DrawBot. Create and animate vector art\, set type with code\, and save your sketches as vector and raster images\, videos\, and .pdfs. \nAs designers\, we use tools to help complete our work but often don’t consider how these tools can box us into certain processes and solutions. Creating our own tools can lead us down new and unexpected avenues in our designs. Some of the best visual ideas come about by setting up some boundaries — a color palette\, a typeface or two — and then running wild within the system. Working out a system in code is a great way to explore these ideas: computers love repetition and can quickly make hundreds of variations on a theme\, and mistakes in the code can result in something that often looks better than what was originally intended. \nNo programming experience is necessary for this course (held over two weekends: Saturday to Sunday\, September 21–22 and September 28–29\, from 10am–1pm)\, but students should be comfortable doing some arithmetic and basic geometry. Workshop participants will learn the basics of the Python programming language while working in the free DrawBot application for MacOS. A quick sketch made with code in DrawBot can be saved as a .pdf to be finished later in Illustrator. Or\, with a little bit more work in the code editor\, an entire book\, magazine\, or animation can be built without even launching Illustrator or InDesign. \nUsing the fundamentals of the Python programming language\, students will sketch to create vector art with code and use the basic principles of design to turn their sketches into PDF documents\, animated .gifs\, and videos.

SUMMARY:Editing with Disability / Illness / Neurodivergence
DESCRIPTION:This coffee chat centers people who work as editors and are living with disability and/or chronic illness. It is open to everyone. The idea was partly inspired by an active peer group currently hosted by the Society of Authors (https://www.societyofauthors.org/Groups/Authors-Disabilities-Illnesses-Network). \nGroup agreements that will be open for discussion at the start of the chat:\n* Disclosure (of illness/disability/etc.) is welcome. Disclosure is not required.\n* There are no requirements. We participate (or not) in the ways that work for us.\n* We take care of ourselves. Stretch\, eat\, drink\, take a break\, etc.\n* We can’t be articulate all the time. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and ask questions.\n* We keep confidentiality: Learning goes\, stories stay. \nThe online chat this Thursday will have an open agenda\, loosely focused on work-life: How do we define\, handle\, and sustain our work as editors. What kinds of projects are a good fit? How do we obtain enough but not too much work (if that is even possible in editing!)? What have we learned and what can we learn from each other? \nThe next chat will be held on Monday afternoon April 10 (RSVP at the Event Calendar). \nThis event is free to attend and open to all editors.

SUMMARY:Working with First-time Authors
DESCRIPTION:Publishing is complicated\, and explaining it to authors—especially first-time and self-publishing authors—can take up hours of your valuable time. Some editors have said that the problem can be intense enough that they actually avoid working with inexperienced author clients\, because the sheer amount of time required is too hard on their profit margins. \nIn this presentation\, editor MC Calvi talks about a powerful solution to this problem\, showing how preexisting resources can be leveraged to support authors\, save time\, and enhance a freelance editor’s chances of scoring future clients. MC will also be introducing their new pay-what-you-want resource\, The Big Little Booklet of Publishing Resource Links\, so editors and authors can immediately begin implementing these strategies themselves. \nSave hours of your valuable time by using these vetted resources to help explain: \n\nHow to get a book published\nHow to self-publish\nWhat type of editing a book needs\nWhat different types of editing entail\nHow to submit a proposal\nHow to write with sensitivity\nHow to navigate rights and permissions issues\nand more!\n\nMC Calvi (they/them) is a freelance editor with eight years’ and hundreds of books’ worth of publishing experience. They have worked for publishers including New Harbinger\, North Atlantic Books\, Counterpoint Press\, Insight Editions\, and Weldon Owen International\, and specialize in self-help\, psychology\, spirituality\, New Age\, and LGBTQ books. When they’re not editing\, they enjoy reading\, writing\, tea\, flannel\, road tripping\, interior decorating\, and hanging out with animals of all kinds. They live in Los Angeles\, California. \n\nREGISTER (required)

SUMMARY:Ghostwriting: What It Is (and Isn’t)
DESCRIPTION:Course Description \nAccording to some publishing experts\, more than half of nonfiction books are written—in whole or in part—by ghostwriters. Although they live in the shadows of the publishing world\, anonymous and unacknowledged\, these skilled scribes often make a good living. But ghostwriting is not for everyone. Join Armin Brott for a presentation and Q&A about ghostwriting\, what it is\, what it is not\, and what it takes to do it successfully. \nInstructor Bio \nArmin Brott has written\, cowritten\, or ghostwritten more than 30 books. His own titles\, including The Expectant Father and The New Father: A Dad’s Guide to the First Year\, have sold more than 2 million copies. And many of the books he’s written for others (which\, of course\, he can’t name) have appeared on various bestseller lists\, including The New York Times.

SUMMARY:The Alcott Family — Lessons from the 19th Century
DESCRIPTION:Progressive school founder\, collector and bibliophile Kent Bicknell will present on his Alcott Family Collection\, winner of a recent prize from the New England-based Ticknor Society. Built around the lives and work of Louisa May Alcott (Little Women)\, her talented sister\, the artist May Alcott Nieriker\, and her parents\, social worker\, Abigail Alcott and progressive educator and reformer\, Bronson Alcott\, highlights include an account of Bronson Alcott’s famed Temple School in Boston; Louisa’s annotated copy of A Memoir of Ralph Waldo Emerson; and four unpublished letters from the artist\, May Alcott Nieriker\, along with images of her paintings. Through more than thirty years of collecting\, Kent has assembled a group of primary and secondary source materials related to this relatively “modern” family\, and will share select manuscripts\, rare books\, letters and artwork to reveal stories that connect the Alcott family to each other\, to the larger community of the 19th century\, and to our own lives today. \nA virtual presentation by Kent Bicknell\, author\, scholar\, and collector

SUMMARY:Workshop: Mastering Book Interior Design: A DIY Formatting Workshop with Atticus
DESCRIPTION:In the ever-evolving landscape of self-publishing\, the presentation of your book plays a critical role in capturing your audience’s attention and delivering a professional reading experience. This workshop is designed to help self-publishing authors understand the best practices of designing the interiors of their books\, and equip them with the skills needed to DIY their formatting at a professional level. \nThis comprehensive workshop\, led by Monique Danielle\, Educational Content Curator from Atticus\, is divided into two insightful sessions. The first hour delves into the best practices for interior book formatting. We’ll explore the principles of typography\, margin settings\, and the importance of choosing the right fonts and spacing to enhance readability and aesthetic appeal. This session aims to demystify the process of turning your manuscript into a visually appealing product that stands out in the competitive market of self-published books. SUMMARY:Things You Didn’t Know Data Merge Could Do
DESCRIPTION:People familiar with InDesign may be familiar with the Data Merge panel\, but may not realize the potential that it holds. By taking this tool and leveraging it with several techniques\, Data Merge can become more than just a “fancy” way of mail merging. This session will demonstrate techniques that allow users to: \n\n\nautofit type for specific frame sizes within a Data Merge; \n\n\nchange colors of type\, QR codes\, and even some graphics during a data merge; \n\n\nprepare bar graphs for use with data merge; \n\n\nswapping out paragraphs or layouts during a data merge. \n\n\nBy the way\, Colin is the guy who wrote the delightfully satirical—and Insightful—“New Features in InDesign 2024 and About Time Too!” which detailed 35 new features that InDesign 2024 should have had\, but didn’t.
