An Open and Fun Forum on Pronouns, Short Attention Spans, and Whatever Else Makes You Crazed and Confused.

Are the rules of copyediting and language usage changing as our culture changes? Of course they are! But how fast, and in a good direction?

This PPN Professional Development session aims to provide everyone a chance to rant, bemoan, prescribe, and plead about whatever sets them off. Think about arguments you’ve had with authors and marketers and offer up your experience to the group for comment. If we don’t change minds and hearts, we’ll at least let you vent your frustrations before a very sympathetic audience!

This session will encourage audience participation, and to get things started we’ll have some very brief comments by two top-notch—and very opinionated—copyeditors.

Gigi Mark started her career as an editorial assistant at Benjamin-Cummings/Addison-Wesley, working on chemistry textbooks, and eventually moved into the developmental editing department there as an associate editor. After a few detours into writing—public relations and marketing—she returned to book publishing, gratefully. She spent fifteen years as a production editor at Jossey-Bass Publishers, moonlighting as a copyeditor and proofreader, before landing in scholarly publishing at Stanford University Press, which was her objective all along. She has been with SUP since 2013.

Chansonette Buck is the owner and executive editor of Appaloosa WordCraft, which provides research, writing, and editing for a wide range of organizational clients—mostly public policy think tanks and nonprofits. She is also a published, award-winning poet. She holds a PhD in English from the University of California, Berkeley.
