Benefits of PPN Membership

Publishing Professionals Network offers something for everyone in book and book-related publishing, from the self-publisher and freelancer to major corporate entities and full-service providers. Founded as Bookbuilders West in 1969 and rechartered as PPN in 2012, we celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2019.

PPN’s mission is to encourage education and development through networking events and to foster publishing excellence and public recognition through our annual Book Show. Our membership is open to any individual or company in the publishing business. We heartily encourage you to join us. This flyer highlights some great reasons for you to become a member.

Engage in Networking and Educational Opportunities

PPN’s social events are great opportunities for members to connect with other publishing professionals and build a network. We host bimonthly meetups, ranging from free informal gatherings to speaker presentations and site visits. All PPN members may purchase discounted tickets for events.

Celebrate Publishing Excellence

Since 1970, we have recognized and celebrated book publishing excellence through judging titles and presenting awards for outstanding book design, production, and manufacturing. Starting in 2020, we have expanded the Book Show into a gala event and have brought together our popular awards ceremony with an opportunity to attend speaker-led sessions on topics related to the Book Show. All PPN members pay reduced fees for Book Show submissions and to attend the Book Show gala. PPN members can request and receive additional Book Show Catalogs while supplies last.

Help Develop Future Publishing Professionals

Our One-Day Publishing Immersion Program, initiated in 2018, pairs guest participants with San Francisco Bay Area host publishers. In just one day, selected individuals get an insider’s look at our business through a visit with an established publisher. You can help support this effort to welcome newcomers to our community by telling others about the One-Day Publishing Immersion Program and/or becoming a host. This program is free to all guest participants, and guest participants receive a free one-year membership in PPN.

Develop Your Business

PPN freelance and owner-operator members have the exclusive opportunity to promote their print and digital publishing-related services in our completely revamped freelance service directory. This directory is available to the community-at-large for reference. Inclusion in the directory is limited to PPN members who operate as freelancers or run owner-operated businesses.

Promote Your Business

PPN provides a venue for members to represent and promote their companies one-on-one at events. Sponsoring companies and members receive an extra promotional benefit: recognition at PPN events, on our website, and in the Book Show Catalog. In addition, job positions submitted by sponsoring PPN members are listed in the monthly PPN Post.

NEW! Exclusive to PPN Members

For 2020, PPN members are able to interact as a community on Slack. We see this as a great opportunity to connect with one another, ask and answer questions, share news and updates, network, and more. We plan to use Slack as a means of communication directly with our member community and to gauge interest in potential events.

Membership Information

As we enter our 51st year, PPN continues to be a nonprofit organization and relies upon membership dues to cover expenses for events, promotions, and operating costs, such as our website.


Our membership dues support the needs of our network while remaining affordable; unchanged for 2020:

$25.00 for individual members
$175.00 for sponsoring companies with up to 9 employees and for individual sponsors
$400.00 for sponsoring companies with 10 or more employees

Dues cover membership for one year from the day of signing up/renewing membership. Members receive renewal notices annually through email and can pay dues online on their membership anniversary.

New for 2020

We are pleased to announce the following changes regarding PPN membership:

  • Change in Renewal: Formerly, membership was due in January regardless of when a member first joined. Changing membership to the sign-up/renewal anniversary ensures that every member gets the value of a full year of membership.
  • Referral Bonus: A PPN member who refers someone who then becomes a member is eligible to receive a referral bonus of a $10 Peet’s gift card for each individual who becomes a member and a $25 Peet’s gift card for each company that becomes a member. This offer is available while supplies last.
