Paul Nylander, Illustrada Design
Expertise
As a design partner for authors, editors, and publishers who seek clarity and collaboration, I’m passionate about crafting books that inspire wonder and help ideas take flight.

As a freelance designer, I’m naturally a problem solver; I’m tuned to always be on the lookout for ways to make the world better—more informative, more convenient, more efficient—from my vantage of creating books and other long-form documents.

The unusual (but not always useful 😉) thing about me is that I actually started in the sciences, earning a Ph.D. in particle physics before deciding academic “publish or perish” wasn’t for me. (How ironic, right?) After grad school, I ran a business focused on measurement instrumentation and software for a number of years (marketing development introduced me to design), moonlighted as a fine-art photographer, then went back to art school with a focus on printmaking and handmade books, before pivoting into book design full-time freelance.
Services Description

Working on both covers and interiors for books from a variety of independent publishers—organizations, small presses, and indie authors. I love the complexity of large, visually rich “coffee table” projects for mission-driven organizations, as well as the beautiful nuances of a variety of genres, including children’s picture books (especially Indigenous/First Nations), business and nonfiction trade, memoir, and a smattering of genre fiction and poetry.
