Chicago's alternative nonprofit newsroom

The Chicago Reader is seeking its next Publisher/CEO. The Chicago Reader has been a fearless, innovative, and nationally respected media voice in Chicago for more than 50 years, as a free arts, culture, politics, and investigative journalism bi-weekly. In print every other week and daily online, its mission is to create and curate political and cultural coverage by and for Chicago, including highlighting underrepresented communities and stories. In May 2022, the nonprofit Reader Institute for Community Journalism (RICJ) took over complete operation of the Chicago Reader from the prior for-profit business, making it a new nonprofit publishing a legacy newspaper and website. RICJ’s budget is approximately $3 million a year, with 38 staff, and dozens of freelancers. This is a remote-work position but living in the Chicago area and attendance at in-person meetings is required. The office is in Bronzeville, on the near south side of Chicago, with one-on-one, small group, and company-wide in-person meetings.
