PPN Conference 2023

Publishing in a Diverse World

We at PPN are thrilled to announce Alex Kapitan as the keynote speaker for our upcoming PPN Conference. The event will take place Friday, April 21, 2023, at the David Brower Center in downtown Berkeley.

Alex Kapitan is a trainer, speaker, consultant, editor, and activist who left the world of nonfiction book publishing to start Radical Copyeditor, an anti-oppressive language project. Alex draws on an eclectic background in the publishing industry, sexuality and gender education, and faith-based organizing to help people and organizations align their words with their values, working with book publishers, academic journals, activist organizations, museums, healthcare providers, media companies, and all sorts of other folks who believe in the power of language to create positive change. Find out more at www.radicalcopyeditor.com.

We hope you will join us to hear Alex’s insights about Publishing in a Diverse World and for a full day of programming that will cover a range of topics including design without bias, accessible publications, trends in printing and manufacturing, sensitivity reading, recruiting and retaining diverse employees and freelancers, creating inclusive book campaigns, and more.

Save the Date!

Thursday, February 16, at 5:30 p.m. (PST, virtual meeting)

Design IS editorial. And yet in publishing, editorial and design concerns (and departments) are often kept at arms length. Designer Debbie Berne will talk about how a deeper understanding of the ideas and mechanics of book design can help editors do their work better. And ultimately, create better working, better looking books.

Debbie Berne is a longtime Bay Area book designer. Her book, The Design of Books: An Explainer for Authors, Editors, Agents, and Other Curious Readers, will be published by University of Chicago Press in Spring 2024 as part of their series Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing.
